Capital
Where Canadian AI capital actually is.
A map of the institutes, programs and funds a Canadian AI company can reach, by region. No dollar figures anywhere, for a reason stated at the top.

How to read this
4 kinds of money, and they do not substitute.

- Non dilutive public
- Tax credits and grants. Slow, documented, and worth more than founders expect because it is the only capital that costs no ownership. It is also the only kind with a filing deadline.
- Institute and research access
- Talent, compute and collaboration rather than cash. The route most often skipped by a company that needs it, because it does not look like funding on a cap table.
- Venture
- Priced, dilutive and the only one on this list that moves at the speed a founder wants. It is also the one where a warm introduction outperforms a strong application, which no map can fix.
- Strategic and corporate
- A customer who invests. The best validation available and the most expensive to unwind, and it belongs in a different conversation from the other 3.
No amounts appear below and that is deliberate rather than lazy. Program envelopes, intake windows and eligibility change on their own schedule, and a stale number in a map like this does more damage than a missing one: a founder who plans against it finds out at the application. Every entry names the body. The current terms are the body's to state.
National
The programs that do not care where you sit.

- SR&ED
- The Scientific Research and Experimental Development tax incentive. The largest single source of non dilutive capital for a Canadian technology company, and the one most often under claimed because the eligible work is documented badly rather than absent.
- NRC IRAP
- The Industrial Research Assistance Program. Advisory support alongside funding, and the advisor relationship is frequently worth more than the cheque.
- Mitacs
- Cost shared research internships that put graduate researchers inside a company on a defined project.
- CIFAR
- Administers the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which is the funding spine underneath the 3 national institutes named in the regions below.
- Scale AI
- Canada's AI global innovation cluster, headquartered in Montreal and national in remit. Co-funds industrial deployment projects rather than research.
- NGen
- The advanced manufacturing cluster. The right door if the deployment sits on a production floor.
- BDC and EDC
- The Business Development Bank for domestic growth and venture, Export Development Canada where the revenue is outside the country. Both are Crown corporations and both are slower and more patient than private capital.
Quebec
Montreal.

- Mila
- The Quebec AI Institute, and the largest concentration of deep learning researchers in the country. Industry membership and collaboration are the routes in.
- IVADO
- Cross institutional research consortium in data science and AI, oriented toward industry partnership.
- Investissement Québec
- The province's own investment arm. Patient, mandate driven, and materially easier to reach than its federal equivalents.
- Fonds de solidarité FTQ and Desjardins Capital
- Two large Quebec institutional pools that invest in growth stage companies in the province.
- Réseau Capital
- The Quebec private equity and venture association. A directory and an introduction surface rather than a funder.
- Bonjour Startup Montréal
- The city's startup ecosystem body. The fastest way to find which of the above is currently open.
Ontario
Toronto, Waterloo, Ottawa.

- Vector Institute
- The Toronto AI institute. Industry sponsorship gives access to a researcher network and a talent pipeline that is difficult to reach any other way.
- MaRS Discovery District
- Toronto's innovation hub, with advisory and investor access attached rather than capital of its own.
- Communitech
- The Waterloo region hub. The strongest single concentration of enterprise software operators in the country.
- Invest Ottawa
- The Ottawa economic development agency. The relevant door where the buyer is federal government.
- Creative Destruction Lab
- An objective setting program rather than an accelerator, run out of Rotman with sites across the country. Its AI stream is the most competitive thing on this page.
- Ontario Centre of Innovation
- Provincial commercialisation and industry partnership funding.
Alberta
Edmonton and Calgary.

- Amii
- The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute in Edmonton, the third of the national institutes, with a reinforcement learning lineage that is genuinely distinct from the other two.
- Alberta Innovates
- The provincial research and innovation agency, with funding streams that reach companies rather than only universities.
- Platform Calgary
- The Calgary hub. The relevant door where the deployment is in energy, industrial operations or logistics.
British Columbia
Vancouver.

- DIGITAL
- The digital technology global innovation cluster, based in Vancouver. Co-funds collaborative industry projects.
- Innovate BC
- Provincial programs across early stage funding, advisory and talent.
- BC Tech Association
- The provincial industry body, and the practical route into the rest of the ecosystem.
The honest part
What a map cannot tell you.
Every body above exists and every one is reachable. What a list cannot encode is which will answer, how long each takes, and which are between intakes. That knowledge goes stale in months rather than years, which is why it circulates by conversation and not by directory.
Nor can a map convert a warm introduction into a cold application. In the venture column especially, the gap between those 2 routes is wider than the gap between any 2 funds on this page.

The rest of the method.
The rest of this is said in a room.
A note publishes the method. What it cannot publish is the 2 hours of argument that produced it, which is the part membership is actually for.
